Anakeesta — from the Cherokee for "place of the balsams" — opened in 2017 and has grown into the model mountaintop park: part canopy walk, part alpine playground, part very good excuse to watch light move across the Smokies with a drink in hand. It begins in the middle of downtown Gatlinburg, where the Chondola loads — choose an open four-seat chair for the breeze or an enclosed six-person gondola cabin — and climbs 600 vertical feet over the treetops to the summit.
Firefly Village sprawls along the ridge in timber and twinkle lights: shops and eateries, the Smokehouse with its park-facing deck, Vista Gardens winding through pollinator plantings, and firepits where s'mores kits appear at dusk. The included headliners are the Treetop Skywalk — 880 feet of gently swaying suspension bridges through the canopy, the longest such span in North America when it opened — and the AnaVista Tower, whose 360-degree platform looks straight into the national park, Mount LeConte dead ahead, Clingmans Dome on the ridge beyond. Add-ons bring the adrenaline: the Rail Runner coaster (single-rail, gravity-fed, genuinely quick), Dueling Ziplines, and the TreeVenture challenge course, plus gem mining and the BearVenture playground for the small crew.
It runs year-round, rain or shine (the gondola cabins carry wet weather), with Winterfest lights and firepit season making the cold months arguably the best ones. Evenings are magic hour — time the Chondola up about 90 minutes before sunset, walk the Skywalk in gold light, and eat on the deck as the ridges go blue. Parking is Gatlinburg's usual adventure; the downtown garages and trolley solve it. Between Anakeesta and the SkyLift Park a block away, Gatlinburg's two mountaintops split neatly: this one for the full village-and-canopy experience, that one for the bridge and the view.
What to Expect
Format
A chondola ride from downtown Gatlinburg to a mountaintop village — canopy skywalk and observation tower included with admission; mountain coaster, ziplines, and challenge course as add-ons; dining, firepits, and gardens on top. Year-round.
Best Time
Late afternoon into sunset — golden light on the Skywalk, dinner on the deck, and the lit village for the ride down. Winterfest evenings (Nov-Feb) are the quiet-season treat.
Duration
Three to four hours with a meal; add an hour if the kids find the playground.
Tips
Buy timed tickets online in peak season. Take an open chair up for the views and a gondola cabin down after dark. Rail Runner sells out on fine days — book the add-on with admission. Downtown garages beat circling for street parking; the trolley drops at the base.

What's included with admission?
The Chondola up and down, Firefly Village, Vista Gardens, the Treetop Skywalk, and the AnaVista Tower. The Rail Runner coaster, Dueling Ziplines, and TreeVenture course are paid add-ons.
Is it scary for people afraid of heights?
The Skywalk's bridges sway gently but have high rails and firm decking; the gondola cabins are fully enclosed. Most height-wary visitors manage happily — the Rail Runner and ziplines are the opt-in thrills.
Does it run in rain or winter?
Year-round, rain or shine — enclosed cabins handle wet rides, and winter brings Winterfest lights and firepits. High winds occasionally pause the ziplines and Skywalk.
How long is the ride up?
About 12-15 minutes on the Chondola, climbing 600 feet from downtown Gatlinburg to the summit village.
Anakeesta or the SkyLift Park?
Anakeesta is the full mountaintop village — hours of canopy walks, rides, and dining. SkyLift Park is a focused hit: the SkyBridge, SkyDeck, and the view, in about an hour. Many visitors do both; with one evening, Anakeesta.
