Dolly Parton's Stampede opened here in 1988 — the first of the franchise, in Dolly's own Smokies — and the formula has filled a thousand seats a night since: two long tiers of tables facing a dirt arena bigger than many rodeo floors, every guest eating a fixed Southern feast while the show rolls through Roman riding, barrel racing, longhorn drives, audience games (chicken chasing draft picks come from the crowd), racing ostriches and pigs, aerial silks, and a flag-waving finale. The North-South seating rivalry — your section cheers its riders — keeps even the between-acts loud.

The meal is the other half of the legend: creamy vegetable soup and a buttery biscuit, a whole rotisserie chicken per guest, hickory-smoked barbecue pork loin, corn on the cob, herb-basted potato, and a hot apple turnover, with unlimited Pepsi products, tea, or coffee — served fast, eaten by hand (silverware on request), with vegetarian and allergy plates arranged at booking. Arrive early: the Horse Walk lets you meet the performers' horses behind glass, and the Carriage Room's opening act warms the crowd before the main doors open.

From early November through December, Christmas at the Stampede swaps in a full holiday production — living nativity, Dickens-dressed cast, carols, and snowfall in the arena — that anchors Winterfest evenings and sells out weekends well ahead. The arena sits mid-Parkway with free parking, one or two shows most nights on a seasonal calendar (dark deep winter). It's the sibling of the Branson Stampede, and between the two towns, this one is the original.

What to Expect

Format

A 1,000-seat arena dinner show — trick riding on 32 horses, audience competitions, racing ostriches, and pyrotechnics, with a fixed four-course Southern feast eaten by hand. About 90 minutes plus the Carriage Room preshow.

Best Time

Early shows for young kids; evening shows for everyone else. November-December's Christmas production is the seasonal headliner — book it weeks ahead.

Duration

Plan 2 to 2.5 hours door to door including the preshow.

Tips

Book online ahead — it's the most-attended dinner show in the Smokies. Arrive 50 minutes early for the Horse Walk. Flag vegetarian or allergy meals at booking; the menu is otherwise fixed. Center sections sit closest to the action, and the North-South split is theater, not a seat-quality difference.

⚡ Quick Picks

Best For

Families and first-timers — dinner and the town's signature spectacle solved in one booking.

Families

The benchmark Pigeon Forge family night; kids get drafted into arena games and nobody negotiates a menu.

Couples

Big, loud fun — couples after quiet should book a Gatlinburg dinner and the SkyBridge at dusk instead.

Pair With

Dollywood by day for the full Dolly double, with the Island's wheel as a nightcap.

Time Needed

One evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in the ticket?

The show plus the four-course feast — soup and biscuit, a whole rotisserie chicken, barbecue pork loin, corn, potato, apple turnover, and unlimited soft drinks, tea, or coffee. Vegetarian and allergy-friendly plates are available if requested when you book.

Do you really eat without silverware?

That's the Stampede tradition — the meal is built for hands — but silverware is cheerfully provided on request.

Is Dolly Parton in the show?

No — it's her production rather than her performance; she appears on screen. The horses, riders, and arena cast carry the night.

What is Christmas at the Stampede?

From early November through December the arena goes full holiday — living nativity, costumed cast, carols, and indoor snow. It anchors the corridor's Winterfest evenings and sells out weekends.

Where is it?

Right on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge with free on-site parking — minutes from the Island and most hotels.
